Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History

Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History

This museum was established in April 1983 to contribute to the raising of citizens’ understanding of the local history and to promote educational, academic and cultural development. Located on the northeastern part of the grounds of Himeji Castle, it was largely designed by Kenzo Tange, who received the Order of Cultural Merit award in 1980. It is evident that the design of this building was inspired by the beautiful “Heron Castle,” especially features like the exterior walls and the crenellation-style air vents. It is also very popular as a photo opportunity spot as the elegant castle tower is reflected on the glass in the windows of the tea lounge. In 1996, it underwent major renovations, including a revision of the regular exhibition, an expansion of the special exhibition area, and the addition of technical equipment. Thereafter, to commemorate its 20th anniversary in 2006, it formulated a framework to make it a new learning and interaction hub for citizens, and embarked a renovation of the entire interior, with a grand reopening on April 20, 2007.
