Sakai's traditional local craftwork ”Wazarashi” - Careful craftsmanship that is safe even for a baby's skin

Sakai's traditional local craftwork ”Wazarashi” - Careful craftsmanship that is safe even for a baby's skin

With its abundant supply of water, the Ishizu River has served as the center of "Wazarashi" production since the early Edo period (1603-1867). The making of wazarashi is a traditional local industry in which impurities are removed from cotton and the material is then cooked in a large pot for around 28 hours, and bleached. At Kadono Sarashisome, we work on every step, from bleaching and dyeing the fabric to making the final product. Visitors will get to observe a careful and reliable manufacturing process. In addition, the hands-on experience program lets visitors "tie-dye" a piece of wazarashi to create their own original tenugui hand towel, which they can take home as a souvenir.
