Experience the traditional craft of Awa Shijiraori at a loom that tells the story of history

As a longstanding textile workshop since 1897, Nagao Orifu handles all steps in the awa-shijira-ori process. A prominent example of the nationally designated traditional craft of "awa-shoai shijira-ori" textiles, this process includes everything from dyes through weaving and finishing. Shijira refers to the fine wrinkles the fabric can form, and reference the Japanese word "chijimi" for "shrinking." The weaving room features rows of early 20th century Showa-era machines, making visitors feel like they have traveled back in time. Get a feel for the history of shijira-ori fabrics with a unique chance to experience hata-ori weaving and ito-sabaki loop spreading that is only available here. Visitors also select fabric combinations for an original item they get to keep as a souvenir.
