Lacquer scraping site tour and lacquer painting experience.

Lacquer scraping site tour and lacquer painting experience.

The Yakuno-cho in Fukuchiyama City boasts a history of 1,300 years as a renowned production region for Tamba lacquer, a core ingredient of traditional Kyoto arts and crafts. Cutting the lacquer trees to draw liquid lacquer out is a critical part of the process. In this program, guests go into the woods with an artisan, learning about the plants and natural ecosystem of Yakuno and observing the tree cutting process in action. They can also try their hand at actual colored lacquer painting after the group returns to the Yakuno Museum of Trees and Lacquer. Guests are welcome to keep the bowls they paint as souvenirs. This Tamba lacquer harvest technique is registered as a Kyoto Prefectural Intangible Cultural Heritage, and is a valuable regional asset to be preserved for future generations.
