Carving and dyeing experience with an Ise Katagami artisan

Carving and dyeing experience with an Ise Katagami artisan

Ise Katagami are stencils used for dyeing simple and complex patterns on the fabric of kimono. Katagami paper, made from sheets of washi paper pasted together with persimmon tannin, is deftly carved with a technique that uses different kinds of chisels. Carving these intricate patterns requires sophisticated technique, patience and perseverance. While listening to a lecture from an artisan, you will carve an Ise katagami stencil, and use it to dye colors on a handkerchief, pouch, eco-friendly reusable bag or other item.
