Mt. Hachiman, with an elevation of 271.9 meters, is the site of Hachiman-yama Castle, built by Toyotomi Hidetsugu in 1585. It is presumed to have been a major fortress with the Honmaru (main compound) at the summit, and secondary compounds such as Ninomaru, Nishi no Maru, Kita no Maru, and Demaru. Today, only its stone walls remain, and the ruins of the Murakumo Gosho Zuiryu-ji Monzeki temple gate are found at the site of the Honmaru. The Hachiman-yama Ropeway connects the foot of the mountain to the summit in about 4 minutes, where you can enjoy views of Lake Biwa and the former castle town of Omi Hachiman.
