Daitoku-ji Oubai-in Zen Temple Special Exhibition
Sen no Rikyu is said to have designed the "Jikichutei moss garden," which features beautiful moss and maple trees to delight visitors' eyes. Special public opening of Daitokuji Obai-in, a temple associated with Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and other leading figures of the Warring States period in the 15th and 16th centuries. Several significant artifacts will be open to the public: The oldest existing kuri living quarters (Important Cultural Property) in a Zen temple, donated by Kobayakawa Takakage, the third son of Mori Motonari, who also served as one of the 5 elder statesmen of the government under Toyotomi Hideyoshi; a temple bell said to have been brought back by Kato Kiyomasa during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598); wall paintings (Important Cultural Property, reproductions) by Unkoku Togan, a painter of the Momoyama period (1568-1600) whose works were said to rival Kano Eitoku and Hasegawa Tohaku. The mid-November maple leaves on the temple grounds are beautiful.
