This page provides official travel information about Tokushima Prefectural Awa Jurobe Yashiki and nearby attractions in the Kansai region of Japan.
This facility is the home of Awa Ningyo Joruri puppet theater, and teaches visitors about the wonders of traditional Japanese performing arts. One well-known puppet performance is Keisei Awa no Naruto, a tale of a family tragedy. One of the characters in the story is named after Bando Jurobe, a village headman who, due to issues in his domain, sacrificed his life for a crime he didn’t commit in 1698. This facility is Jurobe’s former residence, and here visitors can see live performances of Awa Ningyo Joruri, which has been designated a national important intangible folk cultural property. Moreover, in the exhibition room, which was renovated in February 2020, visitors can see and read about stage props, such as costumes and shamisen, as well as numerous unique puppet heads.
