“Kintsugi” the art of repairing pottery with gold (Nantan City)

"Kintsugi" is an ancient Japanese repair technique that connects cracks and chips in vessels with lacquer and decorates them beautifully with gold or silver powder. 'Urujyu' is a brand launched in 2015 by lacquer artist SHIMIZU Ai, with the aim of passing on the three lacquer cultures of "living with lacquer", "lacquer technology", and "domestic lacquer" to future generations. In addition to spreading the culture of lacquer through kintsugi, in 2020 she moved to Miyama, a beautiful forest village in Kyoto, and started planting lacquer trees on fallow land. The name 'urujyu' symbolizes the hope that a small lacquer tree will eventually grow into a larger one with strong roots in the earth, and holds onto hope that it will become a place where people can gather and connect through kintsugi. Come and experience this traditional Japanese sustainable technique in the forests of Kyoto.
